Archaeological Context

The comb was found in a destroyed grave in the early 20th century in Källby, Lund. Unfortunately, not a lot is known about this specific grave.

The grave founds were a sword, knives, leather straps, a ring, fitting from a decorated bridle, this comb and a horse skeleton.

As the grave was destroyed before the excavation, it is not certain if the horse skeleton was originally part of the grave.

Comb Categorisation

This comb is categorised as a type called: "Older composed comb".

These combs have short, arched grip plates. The length of the comb (8.3 cm), cross section and zig-zag pattern of the rivets all fit within the categorisation of this type of comb.

The decoration on this comb - concentric circles - are common for the Iron Age period.
