The Interactive Reporting System is the output result of an ongoing dissertation project which investigates how the application of targeted technologies could contribute to the definition of new forms of publication of archaeological research.

Through the Interactive Reporting System it was possible to publish online the large amount of data collected and produced across the four excavation campaigns carried out at Kämpinge. The IRS is based on a modular structure that comprise the multimedia elements (2D, 3D, docs and so on) made accessible in different ways.

The Interactive Reporting System offers a deep interaction with all the 3D contents in the documentation output, as well as the standard format documentation, since the data are also accessible autonomously in respect of the dynamic report. The transparency of the interpretation process allows for further reuse and reinterpretation of the archaeological stratigraphy.

The tool developed is a sustainable and flexible, tailored to the needs of the daily archaeological fieldwork. Its modular structure can cope with different kinds of archaeological investigations. The Interactive Reporting System combines the potentials of the web-visualization tools with the data management system adopted during the field investigation. It represents a new way to access 3D archaeological data exploiting the capabilities of the 3D models to foster visual and spatial thinking and to facilitate the comprehension of the whole archaeological process.
